Don’t Get Stuck In The Dark – Learn About Serfas® Lights

Summer is here! Yet so quickly daylight hours are already dwindling which means days are getting shorter once again, but don’t let shorter days stop you from riding. Serfas® offers a vast array of high-performance battery powered LED lighting solutions to allow cyclists to see and be seen on the road and/or trail after the sun starts to goes down.

Serfas® Light Products

Headlights
Forward-facing, typically handlebar or helmet mounted; improves rider front visibility to others for safety purposes and to illuminate the area in the direction of travel for the cyclist. Light output comes from one or more compact high-output LEDs emitting a white color temperature light and powered by an internal or external battery source.

Taillights
Rear-facing, typically seat post or seatstay mounted; used to improve rear visibility to others for safety purposes and to illuminate rear area with red safety light. Light output comes from one or more compact high-output LEDs emitting a red safety light and powered by an internal or external battery source.

Helmet Lights
Helmet mounted forward-facing (headlight), rear-facing (taillight); used to improve rider front and/or rear visibility to others for safety purposes and to illuminate the area in the direction of travel and/or illuminate the rear area with red safety light.

Wheel Lights
Also referred to as novelty lights because they are often used mostly for fun as opposed to strictly for safety purposes; wheel lights are often compact and internally battery powered and mount to bicycle wheel spokes to create a blurred light effect due to the high speed rotation of the bicycle’s wheels.

BLAST® Equipped Audible Low Battery Indicator Lights
Serfas® Blast Audible Low Battery Indicator Lights are designed to emit an audible low battery indication, an 85 decibel beep when battery power is low, to allow riders to focus on the road ahead without having to worry about a light going out unnoticed.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What is lumen?
Lumen is the International System of Units (SI) derived unit of luminous flux, a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a source. Represented by symbol (Lm). Serfas® lights are tested in-house as part of our product development process to ensure accuracy of specified performance figures using a 20 inch N.I.S.T. National Institute of Standards and Technology traceable standard integrating sphere. This system uses a full light spectrum detector, providing a super accurate measure of lumen, kelvin, run times, and brightness.

What is color temperature?
Color temperature is a characteristic of visible light and is conventionally expressed in kelvin, using the symbol K, a unit of measure for absolute color temperature. Color temperatures over 5000K are called “cool colors” (bluish white), while lower color temperatures (2700-3000K) are called “warm colors” (yellowish white through red). Serfas® headlights utilize a 5000K color temperature for a bright “Daylight” color light output that creates a sharp contrasting illumination.

Tell me about your batteries?
For many high-powered Serfas® lights, Serfas® uses high quality rechargeable Lithium-Ion batteries (Li-ion). Li-ion batteries have relatively low self-discharge, are low maintenance, and are lightweight when compared to other kinds of batteries. Li-ion also provides the largest energy density to weight ratio of battery types available today. Some Serfas® entry-level and novelty lights also utilize traditional flat pancake style LRxx series, AA, and AAA batteries. Rechargeable batteries are replaceable dependent upon light model.

How are lights mounted
Most Serfas® headlights are quick-release mounted utilizing a molded keyed slot polymer mounting point for which to slide into a handlebar mount, this allows removal for secure storage and charging purposes. Other Serfas® headlights and taillights are mounted using a quick and easy silicone rubber ladder-style strap to universally accommodate various diameter bike frame tubing sizes.
