This is a first impression review since today is the first day that I have used these pads. I installed them onto the Shimano Canti brakes that I have on my Gunnar Crosshair and the pads replaced the stock Shimano pads that came with the brakes. After installation, I went on a 20 mile mixed(pavement, gravel, singletrack) ride that included around 2000 feet of elevation change.
First, let me say that installation, along with centering and toeing in the pads was very easy and fast. The ride stared out with a shallow, but consistent gravel climb which led to a 1/2 mile gravel downhill with several sweeping turns. The pads provided good, consistent braking on this descent, and I felt that I was able to easily control the bike thru the sweepers. Next up was a longest moderately steep gravel climb that was followed by a section of fire road rollers. The road dipped in and out of several southern Appalachian coves, giving me a chance to test the brakes as I moderated my speed while trying to maintain some momentum to help carry me up and out of each cove. This part of the ride ended at a trail junction with the Blue Ridge Parkway, thus allowing for a short, but sweet paved downhill. The last part of the ride was a mix of gravel, trail, and pavement, thus allowing me to put the pads through their paces.
All in all, I was quite pleased with these pads. They performed well, allowing me to scrub speed without experiencing any brake grab and stops were achieved with, for rim brakes, little effort. One thing that really impressed me was how noiseless they were. Many times I have had problems with brake howl on my front brakes. At least on this one ride, the howl was a non issue. Based on first impressions, these pads are 5 stars!
