Quick Overview

“BLAST” Audible Low Battery Indicator

Coming up with ways to make you safer on the road, when using Serfas lights, is a top priority. NEW for 2016, our “BLAST” Audible Low Battery Indicator emits a loud 85 Decibel signal when your light battery gets under 10 minute runtime in that specific mode.

How It Works

  • When the battery reaches 10 minutes of runtime, in its current mode, the light will emit a long beep followed immediately by a short beep. Sound will continue every minute.
  • When the power button is pressed it will put the light in the next longest running mode & it will restart the battery low alert until 10 minutes of runtime in the mode is reached. Repeat as necessary. Example: Going from highest mode to lowest mode at first beep could extend runtime up to 5 times.*
  • Light will emit beep sound repeatedly when last minute of runtime in the current mode is reached.
  • While charging the light the power button will blink blue. When full charge is achieved light will beep to notify charging cycle is complete.
  • Light emits a beep when power button is pushed & light goes from mode to mode.

Great visibility, in particular the High Rapid setting! Unfortunately the steady light settings have the shortest run-times: about 1hr for highest setting/ about 3.5hrs for lowest setting.

That said, even the lowest Flash setting has better visibility than any removable head light I’ve seen in a similar size and goes for 28.5hrs! I use the High/ Rapid flash mode and that runs 6.50hrs which is plenty for me. Very compact, light, and unintrusive. Recharges very quickly via USB so convenient!

A little longer run-time on the steady modes would make it 5 stars for me 😉

Perhaps Ver 2.0 might have a pivot on the bracket to make stem mounting possible. Head tube installation seems designed to work only on Disc brake bikes as front caliper or canti brake and/ or cables impact, move and obstruct the head light.

I own both the Orion headlight and taillight, and love them both! This taillight has plenty of different options for display, including solid state modes and flashing modes. The solid state modes don’t last too long (all times I’ve seen so far have been in line with the description), but that is to be expected for a compact rechargeable light. I use mine in the blinking red light mode, and have had other cyclists ask me what kind it is because it is so bright. I give this light a five star rating, but there is one thing I would like to see upgraded in the next version to make it a perfect light: consider a sturdier mounting bracket. The current bracket is mounted via a rubber piece that goes around the seat post, and it has a tendency to move a bit if you are on rougher roads: with that being said, the movement I’ve seen has been minimal, but I think a sturdier bracket may do the trick a bit better. Great light!

This light is in a different tier when it comes to quality and utility. In my opinion is a fair price for what you get. I was presently surprised of the quality and adjustability, indispensable if you like to ride at night.

I’ve been a fan of the Serfas Thunderbolt Tail and Head Light for the last few years and had them on all my bikes and even my dog trailer. The Orion is a giant leap taking these lights to the next level. With the Thunderbolt head light, I only used it as a front flasher. If need light to see where I’m going at night, I’ve been very happy using Serfas’s TSL line. Even though the Orion Head Light is a bar style (vs. spot), with 300 lumens I tested it to work well as long as I kept speed below the 10-12mph level. This came in very handy at Hotter N Hell 100 because it is still dark during the line-up. Yet

I use it every night mounted on the back of my helmet 10 miles of ride are roadside. I use different modes on the road versus the bike trail.

This light was extremely visible for day and night compare to any other tail lights so far,its a high quality product worth to buy for your safety, the only cons is the slow flashing speed on some modes, overall are happy with the purchased and will recommend to friends .

Hi CWong, We are glad to hear you are enjoying your new UTLA-8 Orion Blast Tail Light and are happy with its performance! Regarding the flash speeds, the light modes are designed with careful consideration to most efficiently maximize remaining usable battery life so in the event you are out riding and the UTLA-8 alerts to a low charge you can then choose to change the light to a more efficient mode that will last for longer than the previously selected mode. Utilizing this strategy will ideally allow you to get to where you are going without getting stuck in the dark with no light at all. Thank you again for your feedback, our internal Product Development and Design team will be notified. Thank you for choosing Serfas! – The Serfas Team

This is one serious tail light. Used it last night for the first time and was told by my fellow riders to turn down the intensity. I’ll feel confident riding on the roads that fellow road users will be able to see me and give the appropriate space. Super quick mount to remove. The aero seat post mount meshes perfect to my seatpost. Great light Serfas! You guys design great products

Hi Aaron, We’re glad to hear you are enjoying your Orion Blast and feel safer riding with it! It sounds like you really shed some light on your friends, perhaps even “blasted” them! Thanks for the great feedback and enjoy your rides! – The Serfas Team

I have had this light for about 1 1/2 year. I love this light but it has an extremely short life span. My rides run about 1 1/2-2 hours and it never makes it for the whole trip. Starting recently, it also acts funky when being charged. I signals the “about ready to die” noise while on the charger. I love the increased visibilty but hate the short life span.

    • Serfas

Hi Janet, We’re happy to hear how much you are enjoying your UTLA-8 Orion Blast! Battery life expectancy per charge is directly related to whichever light mode is being used most, for example the Orion Blast on Solid High Mode can expect up to 1 hour of runtime while on High Flash Mode its runtime goes up to 8 hours. Depending on the mode being used it’s possible it is performing within specifications but please have a look at the Orion Blast instructions to view our Mode/Expected Battery Life Chart, click here. Thanks again for the feedback and enjoy your Orion Blast! – The Serfas Team

  9. Janet Hanson

Can you tell me, as I described above, why it makes the “about to die” sound while on the charger?

  10. Janet Hanson

*Sigh*. I figured this all out. never get a gadget smarter than you. Thx.

    • Serfas

Hi Janet, No worries! Apologies for overlooking that detail in your first comment regarding the beeping while on the charger. The Orion Blast will beep to alert of a full charge as well as emit a long beep followed by two short beeps during use when it detects 10 minutes of remaining battery runtime left in its current light mode. Apologies again for the inconvenience and happy to hear you figured it out! Please do feel free to contact us with any further questions! – The Serfas Team
